Fever in Children: What Calgary Parents Should Know
Fever is one of the most common reasons parents visit our Sage Hill clinic — and most of the time, it is the body doing its job fighting an infection. Here is when to relax, and when to act.
Go to Emergency or call 911 if your child is under 3 months old with any fever (38.0°C / 100.4°F or higher, taken rectally), is hard to wake, has a stiff neck, a new rash that doesn’t fade when pressed, trouble breathing, a seizure, or signs of dehydration (no tears, no wet diapers).
See a doctor within a day or two if fever lasts more than 3 days, keeps returning, comes with ear pain or pain with urination, or your child just seems to be getting worse instead of better.
At home: fluids, rest, and acetaminophen or ibuprofen dosed by weight (never aspirin in children). Dress them lightly — bundling traps heat. The number on the thermometer matters less than how your child looks and behaves.
